Erectile Dysfunction
Chapter 5
4. Perhaps try spicing things up a little! Try something different
- maybe a new and somewhat "dangerous" location, watching
a racy video together, trying a new sex toy or watching your partner
use one, body paint, costumes, ice, feathers - whatever tickles
your fancy. Again, don't be goal oriented. Change your attitude
about sex. Try to experience the new situations for what they are
- not for what you are trying to achieve here. If, for example,
you think to yourself - "hey, if I watch this video with my
partner, I'll get an erection and be able to finally have intercourse
with her." you will almost certainly reduce your chances for
success. If, on the other hand you think "Maybe my partner
might like to try this new vibrator - I'd sure like to watch her
use it!" you will be more inclined to see an end to your difficulties
and improve your sex life beyond where it was before you started
having problems in the first place.
If nothing seems to work however, there are definitely situations
wherein medical help might be your best bet. Consult with a specialist.
Do not go to a general practitioner - except to obtain a referral.
Once you have determined that the cause is indeed medical, be aware
of your options. Due to a massive marketing campaign, Pfizer would
have us believe that Viagra is the only course of action available
to the individual - it definitely is not. The following table
reprinted from "Erectile Dysfunction in Diabetes: Pills for
Penile Failure" in the Clinical Diabetes Journal, 1998, No3
illustrates this fact as well as points out some of the areas of
concern associated with the various treatment options.
So as you can see, Erectile Dysfunction is a considerably more
complex condition than some would have us believe. It is not comparable
to a simple headache and should not be treated as such. Ensure you
thoroughly investigate all your options and discuss them with more
than one clinician. As always, your best defense against ill-health
is education.
