Sex Over 60?
Chapter 2

Arthritis and joint pain can be problematic, but needn't prevent anyone from enjoying satisfying sex. Through simply experimenting with different positions and taking a pragmatic approach to these concerns, this need not become an impediment to satisfying sex. In fact, it might be argued that the same pragmatism with which we must all approach safer sex in the post AIDS world, can be brought to bear in solving this type of problem. Creatively addressing these concerns can lead to general stimulation of the imagination, which in turn usually results in better sex! If you don't think you're up to the sexual gymnastics you might have once felt you were expected to perform, why not try relaxing with a nice warm bath first, and let yourself enjoy a warmer, slower paced, more intimate experience. It needn't even result in orgasm to qualify as great sex!

Remembering my own earlier youthful explorations into the realm of physical pleasure, I can honestly say that many of my fondest sexual memories were of a non-orgasmic nature. My lover and I still enjoy slipping in and out of consciousness together while fondling and cuddling in a semi-conscious, sexual haze. It's a handy technique you may be familiar with if you have ever raised children.

Part of the problem our society has in dealing frankly with the subject of sex in later life, is that there are so few positive images for us to focus on. Pornography is virtually always depicting young people thrashing, grinding and pummeling their way to Olympic-performance orgasm upon orgasm. Most people don't actually perform or even bend that way to start with. If it seems to you that those starlets are getting younger and younger each year, it's not just you. The growing preoccupation with younger and younger sexual characters in pornographic fantasy is real, growing inversely with the average age of the population, and points to an unhealthy attitude in general about aging I think. Aging is kind of like masturbating. We all do it; we just don't want to be seen doing it.
