Sex During Pregnancy
Chapter 2

After the morning sickness starts wearing off, many women discover their sex drive picking up again. The great part for everyone is that the vast majority of women claim that their sex drives during pregnancy are higher than ever! Even better is the fact that women experience longer, more intense orgasms than before! Add the fact that it takes women less time to achieve orgasm than usual and you have an all around good thing happening here. This is largely due to the increase in blood flow to the uterus, pelvis, vagina, and clitoris. One caveat however, the tissue in the vagina may also become irritated more than usual as a result of this increase, making it uncomfortable to have sex for long periods of time, or more than once a day. It is normal, however, to experience a little cramping after an orgasm or a small amount of spotting after intercourse throughout pregnancy.

Again, during the final month of pregnancy, many women find that they are fatigued and uncomfortable and experience a commensurate decrease in their sex drives. Carrying around that much extra weight in your belly makes it uncomfortable to stand, lie down, or do seemingly anything. At this point, they're beginning to want that baby out of there and have their bodies back to themselves, but if they can muster up the energy to do it in a way that you are comfortable enough, sex is possible right up until the birth. Semen also contains prostaglandin (a hormone used to help induce labor). Many doctors say that this has little effect on inducing this condition in women that reached this stage of pregnancy, but there doesn't appear to be a consensus on the issue. At the very least, men can claim that they're just trying to help!

On the psychological side of things, sex during pregnancy can be very liberating. No more worrying about messy condoms or diaphragms wrecking the mood, or having to remember to take your pill. Sex is especially good for couples that have been trying for some time to get pregnant. It is no longer a mission, for a purpose, you can just go ahead and have fun!

Although every couple is different, a lot of men report that they feel increased desire towards their partner while she is pregnant. He will probably be very impressed with her new, increased breast size (as will she). Some men are turned on by the fact that their wife or girlfriend is pregnant with his child, almost always good for the ego. Many women are delighted with their new shape and feel sexy; some, however, do not feel as attractive as usual and will need the help of her partner to be able to see how beautiful she is.

As you may have imagined, not all sexual positions are going to be comfortable, or even achievable as the baby (and your tummy) get bigger and bigger. Think of it as a fun reason to experiment with new ideas. One of the easiest and most comfortable positions during pregnancy is the woman on top, especially in more of a sitting position. This is obvious, as the woman can control what is comfortable for her and there is no weight being put on her belly. Other positions that you may find comfortable include the spoon position (you both lay side by side, on your side with the man behind the woman), and rear entry (doggy style) with the woman on her hands and knees and the man entering from behind. You may find towards the end of the pregnancy, that intercourse will be more difficult and wish to forgo it in favor of increased amounts of oral sex or mutual masturbation.

However you decide to enjoy yourselves, just remember that it is now more important than ever to try to communicate your needs to each other and to be understanding of your partner's emotions. You will not be having sex for a good number of weeks after the birth of the baby, so you might as well enjoy as much of it as you can now. Sex during pregnancy is different, and they always say that keeping things fresh is the best way to spice up your sex life, so consider it an opportunity to do so!
